- Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Regina Vargo, on the Free Trade Area of the Americas
-
Negotiations to create a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) are underway to eliminate barriers to trade among 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere. Launched after the Summit of the Americas in Miami in 1994, the negotiations concluded in 2005. Recent events, however, have complicated the process. The United States' imposition of tariffs on imported steel and granting of billions of dollars in new subsidies for agricultural production, and the election of Lula da Silva, a Leftist critic of free trade, as president of Brazil have raised questions over the commitment to free trade of the hemisphere's two largest economies. In this Ask the Experts session, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Regina Vargo, from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, talks about the FTAA with Globalization101.org's Sherman Katz.

- New Zealand ambassador, on agricultural trade
-
Trade in agricultural goods is among the most restricted in the international trading system. Virtually all developed countries provide substantial subsidies for their own products and maintain high tariffs and low quotas for foreign products designed to protect domestic farmers. Many developing countries therefore blame developed countries for harming their economies by preventing their most competitive exports from freely trading in the international market. Agriculture has thus become a significant subject in the current Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organization. In this Ask the Experts session, the New Zealand ambassador to the United States, Mr. John Wood, talks about agricultural trade with Globalization101.org's Sherman Katz.
