Job Description

Wayne State University, a thriving public research university committed to urban engagement, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for dean of the School of Business Administration.

Committed to access, research, and community, Wayne State serves a critical role within the education landscape of Michigan and is one of a few institutions nationally to hold the highest Carnegie designation in research and community engagement. Under the leadership of a new president, the university is in a moment of significant transformation and on the threshold of becoming an even stronger institution that serves the students of Detroit and beyond. The dean’s position offers an excellent opportunity to strengthen Wayne State’s School of Business Administration as a research institution with a strong urban mission. Founded in 1868, and a longstanding leader in research and community engagement, Wayne State today enrolls a coeducational student body of nearly 27,000 students across 13 schools and colleges. Wayne State’s main campus encompasses nearly 200 acres, including landscaped walkways that link more than 100 education and research buildings. As Michigan’s only urban research university, Wayne State values its responsibility to its city and state. The School of Business Administration places significant emphasis on globalization and distance education and technology and is an important contributor to the social and economic development of southeastern Michigan and beyond. With approximately 2,400 undergraduate students and approximately 700 graduate students, all Wayne State business programs are fully accredited by AACSB International. The school offers a B.S. and B.A. degree in business administration, an M.B.A with subject area concentrations and an online option as well as an M.S. in accounting, M.S. in taxation, a joint J.D./M.B.A. degree, and a Ph.D. in business administration with specializations in finance, management, and marketing.

The university is seeking an exceptional leader with the ability to build on the school’s existing strengths to create a bold and ambitious vision for the future of business education at Wayne State University. The ideal candidate will have the ability to connect the students, faculty, and school with the business community, and demonstrated fundraising success. He or she will have exceptional communication and relationship-building skills and the ability to lead and manage change. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess proven experience with strategic planning, the ability to lead and create student and program growth, proven experience supporting and extending the research and scholarship of others, creativity and an entrepreneurial outlook, the energy and inclination to seek continuous improvement, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity of people and ideas.

Applicants for this position should hold an earned advanced degree in business or related fields and an intimate knowledge of the academic values of a comprehensive university. Inquiries, nominations, and applications are invited. Review of applications is currently underway and will continue until the position is filled. For fullest consideration materials should be received by February 5.

Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile available at www.wittkieffer.com, and the names and contact information for five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. Materials should be sent electronically via email to the university’s consultants, Robin Mamlet, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and Robert Luke, at WayneBusDean@wittkieffer.com.

Wayne State University values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.
