Job Description

The University of Kitakyushu seeks applications from qualified candidates for one full-time tenured position in American Studies with a focus on any of the below:

  1. Business
  2. Literature
  3. Culture

Successful applicants will be affiliated with the English Department of the Faculty of Foreign Studies.

Start Date: October 1, 2014

Position: Associate Professor or Lecturer

Courses to be Taught: Seminar in American Studies, Reading and Discussion, Foundational Studies (English), and other related undergraduate courses. It is possible that the successful candidate will also be asked to teach postgraduate courses.

Contract Type/Term: Tenure

Conditions and Qualifications:

  • Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent qualification(s) in a relevant field.
  • Applicants should be native speakers of English and have sufficient Japanese ability to undertake administrative tasks in a Japanese language environment.
  • Applicants should have had at least one year of professional experience in teaching English/American Studies within a university environment.
  • The terms of employment and working conditions of this position including salary and promotion will follow the established guidelines and regulations of The University of Kitakyushu.

  1. Curriculum vitae.
  2. Copies of all diplomas including and beyond the bachelor’s degree. (Photocopies are admissible.)
  3. List of academic publications.
  4. Copies of three major publications (one of which may be the candidate’s doctoral thesis). (Photocopies are admissible.)
  5. An abstract in Japanese (approx. 1200 characters) outlining one of the publications submitted.
  6. A short essay in English (approx. 500 words) outlining the candidate’s educational philosophy regarding the teaching of English and field-related subjects.

After application materials have been reviewed, finalists will be interviewed and asked to give a demonstration class. Application materials must be received by April 30, 2014.
