Job Description

Portland State University (PSU) seeks a visionary, entrepreneurial, and innovative leader as the next dean of its School of Business Administration and invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest. The successful candidate will embrace PSU’s unique opportunities and advantages as Oregon’s largest and fastest growing university.

The PSU School of Business Administration enrolls more than 4,500 undergraduate and 475 graduate students each year, making it the largest business school in the State.

The university seeks an individual who is performance driven, passionate about the social purpose and economic impact of public universities, stimulated by an entrepreneurial environment, and capable of leading the PSU School of Business Administration to the next level of distinction in teaching, research, and community outreach and engagement. The dean will share the responsibility for providing vision and leadership in academic, scholarship, community engagement, and fund-raising activities for an integral school component within the university. The dean will help to shape the future of the school, articulating a vision consistent with the university’s strategic plan, enhancing its standard of excellence, and defining the directions of its growth based on new and multi-disciplinary connections across the university. He or she will set the standard for intellectual discourse and scholarly accomplishment, advancing research and scholarship, education and engagement in business, particularly in the Portland community and throughout the State of Oregon. The dean will be encouraged to nourish and extend private sector partnerships, supporting them through education of the future workforce, engaging the expertise of the faculty to address business and community issues and generating support for faculty research. With a commitment to excellence and diversity, the dean will be responsible for student and faculty retention and recruitment while cultivating and stewarding the unique culture of PSU and the Portland community. The university anticipates that the new dean will bring a distinguished record of academic and management success and a demonstrated record of scholarly achievement. However, candidates whose leadership abilities and outstanding accomplishments in business could translate well to academia are also welcomed and will receive serious attention and consideration. He or she will have demonstrated the ability to foster a climate where learning and discovery flourish as well as an understanding of the academic enterprise. The dean will show the ability to balance strong academic and intellectual leadership with effective external relationship-building and resource development.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the Leadership Statement, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates.

These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to the Portland State University’s consultants Zachary A. Smith, Ph.D. and Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Taylor at PSUDeanBus@wittkieffer.com . The consultants can be reached by telephone at 630-575-6154. Documents that must be mailed may be sent to: Witt/Kieffer 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510 Oak Brook, IL 60523
