Job Description

Fort Lewis College, a selective public liberal arts college located in Durango, Colorado, seeks a Dean of the School of Business Administration. The preferred starting date is July, 2017.

Fort Lewis College is located in Durango, the hub of Southwestern Colorado. It is a thriving multicultural community set along the beautiful Animas River Valley.

Averaging 300 sunny days per year and situated at 6,500 feet and located between the San Juan Mountains and the desert Southwest, Durango is renowned for its outdoor opportunities. In the winter, numerous ski resorts are within an easy drive, and backcountry skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing are easily accessible. In warmer seasons, hiking, biking, river running, golfing, and fishing can be enjoyed right downtown. Durango itself is a small, friendly, historic town of 17,000, and is the seat of La Plata County, with a population of 55,000. Durango features numerous dining, shopping, and cultural amenities usually associated with larger urban areas, and is connected by major airlines directly to Denver and Phoenix.

About the School of Business Administration and the Deanship

The Fort Lewis College School of Business Administration prepares students for success in a complex and dynamic economy by creating diverse learning experiences in a student-centered environment. Students participate hands-on in business development, through the application of coursework, faculty-led research, consulting projects, and internships. The School of Business Administration is also actively involved in the local and regional economy. Students have opportunities to engage in community-based learning, service projects, or even travel abroad on faculty-led study abroad trip during either a fall, spring or summer term. The School of Business Administration at Fort Lewis College has been continuously accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) since 1974 accredits the Fort Lewis College School of Business Administration.

Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include an earned doctorate or terminal degree in business or a related field; a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship; as well as, a proven record of successful leadership and progressive experience in academic administration.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, strategic thinking and to articulate a clear and compelling vision;
  • Evidence of a collaborative and congenial leadership style with strong communication skills, including the abilities to listen and advocate for the School of Business Administration;
  • Experience with AACSB accreditation;
  • Demonstrated track record as an innovative thinker in the development, enrichment, and assessment of programs;
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional ethics and integrity;
  • A record of building partnerships across the disciplines and collaborations with external organizations and institutions;
  • A talent for collegiate fundraising and experience with donors;
  • Strong organizational, personnel management, fiscal management and budgetary skills;
  • Credentials that support appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the programs of the School of Business Administration;
  • Student-centered, with an appreciation of the mission of a teaching institution;
  • Appreciation for diversity and a record of promoting diversity and inclusion with faculty, students and staff.
