2) FEATURED COUNTRY

Our featured country this month is South Africa.

Host of the United Nations 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD), South Africa is an emerging market and considered the political
and economic leader in Southern Africa. Sometimes called the “cradle of
civilization”, because of its archaeological discoveries, South Africa
has a great diversity of people, plants and animals. From the majestic
mountains and sandy beaches of the Western cape to the indigenous
forests of the Northern province, the country offers a range of climates
and unpararelled sites and experiences for the visitor. On the business
side, the highly developed infrastructure and economy makes the country
a good investment destination in Africa.

“The CIBER community is at a crossroads. How can we reinvent ourselves
so that we can more effectively address urgent national needs?” “ How
can we establish ourselves as indispensable national resources? How
should we assist both the business community and the public sector in
acquiring the skills and the perspectives to function effectively in
today’s complex global.” These are some of the issues addressed by Dr.
Cavusgil in this thought provoking article on the role of CIBERs in

4) MEDIA UPDATE

Trading Places
The Economist Global Agenda (August 30, 2002)
http://www.economist.com/agenda/displaystory.cfm?story_id=1302217

The long awaited decision from the World Trade Organisation is now out
and once again, America’s tax breaks have been found to be not in
compliance with WTO rules. The EU can now impose $4 billion worth of
trade sanctions against America but according to the article, this is
only one of the contentious issues Supachai Panitchpakdi, the new
director-general has to deal with before the Doha round of international
trade negotiations.
