2) FEATURED COUNTRY

Our featured country this month is Botswana.

Botswana is one of the few and rare success stories of Africa. The country has just been ranked the best for good governance and emerged as the overall leader in quality of public institutions among 21 African economies that were ranked by the World Economic Forum (see related article in "Media Updates" below). A country richly endowed with diamonds (the biggest diamond producer in the world), Botswana is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and promotes an investment friendly climate with a low investment risk. GlobalEDGE has more information and links on Botswana at:

The GMS: A Broad Conceptualization of Global Marketing Strategy and Its Effect on Firm Performance
by Shaoming Zou and S. Tamer Cavusgil
http://globaledge.msu.edu/KnowledgeRoom/FeaturedInsights/0030.pdf
Despite the strong interest in global marketing, there is no consensus in the literature about what constitutes a global marketing strategy and whether it affects a firm's global market performance. The authors develop a broad conceptualization of global marketing strategy, the GMS, that integrates three major perspectives-namely, the standardization, configuration-coordination, and integration perspectives-of global marketing strategy.

A recent economics competitiveness survey conducted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) placed Botswana at the top of the list for good governance. Botswana was also the overall winner out of 21 African countries followed by Tunisia, Gambia and in fourth place, South Africa. The survey is a result of feedback from business leaders who provided answers on such issues like governance, contracts, law and corruption in the countries they operate in.

Treaty is Imminent for Genetically Engineered Foods
Science News, by Janet Raloff
http://www.sciencenews.org/20030621/food.asp
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is aimed at addressing the concerns raised about the risks associated with genetically modified organisms! (GMOs). The treaty needed 50 countries to ratify it before the 90-day countdown for making it into law and as the 50th country to sign; Palau effectively set this process in motion.

What's your opinion on GM foods? Please take a few seconds to enter your response to the "quick poll" question available on our home page (just scroll down the page).
