globalEDGE Newsletter October 2003 Vol. 2 - Issue 4
Having joined the European Union
(EU) in 1995 and fully introducing the Euro currency in 2002, Austria's economy
(the 33rd largest
in the world) is now closely integrated with other EU member countries,
especially Germany. Not only is Austria an active member of the EU, but it is
also involved in world affairs. Vienna, the capital city, hosts the Secretariat
of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the headquarters of
the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN Industrial Development
Organization, and the UN Drug Control Program. Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most
famous modern day Austrians, is the head of the world's fifth largest economy
following his victory in the gubernatorial race for the US state of
California. globalEDGE(TM) has more information and links on Austria
