2) FEATURED COUNTRY

Our featured country this month is Austria.

Having joined the European Union (EU) in 1995 and fully introducing the Euro currency in 2002, Austria's economy (the 33rd largest in the world) is now closely integrated with other EU member countries, especially Germany. Not only is Austria an active member of the EU, but it is also involved in world affairs. Vienna, the capital city, hosts the Secretariat of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN Industrial Development Organization, and the UN Drug Control Program.  Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most famous modern day Austrians, is the head of the world's fifth largest economy following his victory in the gubernatorial race for the US state of California.  globalEDGE(TM) has more information and links on Austria at:

The Internationalisation of Services Marketing
by Paul Hill
http://globaledge.msu.edu/KnowledgeRoom/FeaturedInsights/0002.asp
A services delivery has some unique elements in comparison to a product delivery. The author first lists these elements, and then describes the challenges that a services exporter has to face. Although there is no magic formula that guarantees success, the author gives some generic guidelines that may help an intending exporter alleviate these problems.

Nowadays it is no surprise when factories move overseas searching for cheaper wages, especially when this movement occurs from a developed country to a non-developed country. However, it is more surprising to see one of China's best-known companies opening up a factory in South Carolina, USA to produce refrigerators and to compete against Whirlpool and Maytag. The main reasons behind this Chinese company's decision is explored in this article.

Argentina and Brazil Align to Fight US Trade Policy
The New York Times, by Tony Smith
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/21/business/worldbusiness/21braz.html
Argentina and Brazil have decided to join forces to protect their own interests in trade negotiations with the US. This new position undertaken by two developing countries is the result of the growth of new commerce partners, such as China, and new economic blocks, such as the Mercosur. This new market situation is producing a sense of equilibrium among all parties in the world commerce game, compelling every country to review its trade policies.
