1) 2003 in Review

Happy New Year from the globalEDGE Team. 2003 was a great year for us with the launch of many new and exciting attributes.

For faculty, researchers, and teachers, we launched our new
Academy section featuring internationally focused business information including video and case depositories, academic conference announcements, grant opportunity listings, links to academic and professional journals, and a comprehensive list of professional organizations. Within the Academy, we also added the Job Postings section that provides a directory of higher education academic job opportunities worldwide.

Our Resource Desk was the focus of two major new initiatives in 2003. As part of our Country Insights section we added the Country Comparator, a feature that allows users to compare information on up to 5 statistical indicators for up to 10 different countries. Additionally, we released our 2003 Market Potential Indicators, a ranking of 24 emerging markets on various elements indicating their globalization potential.

In the Knowledge Room we posted a temporary special section that brought together a number of different third party resources to analyze the impact that the War in Iraq would have on international business.

We thank you for your support of globalEDGE and we look forward to continuing to serve your international business research and information needs in 2004. As always, we welcome your feedback on any of the above initiatives or anything you would like to see from us in the coming year.

Regards, The globalEDGE Team

2) FEATURED COUNTRY

Our featured country this month is Russia.

Since the time of the Czars, Russia has always played a critical role in the world's balance of power. After a long period of totalitarian regimes, the country is going through a huge transition to free-market economy. The recent enlargements of the EU and NATO have also deeply affected Moscow's traditional position in a world of dynamic borders and evolving politics. An economy that grows at nearly 7%, a population of more than 144 million, and rich natural resources make the
world's largest country, Russia, an exciting yet challenging place to live and do business. globalEDGE has more information and links on Russia at:

How Parmalat Went Sour
BusinessWeek, by Gail Edmondson & Laura Cohn
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_02/b3865053_mz054.htm
The bankruptcy of one of the jewels of European capitalism has increased the awareness of business scandals worldwide. Italy based Parmalat, one of the largest dairy-food companies in the world, produced one of the biggest accounting frauds in history and now may have to explain what happened to a sum that is $8.5 billion to U$12 billion in vanished assets. This article addresses some important questions on Parmalat's financial operations and provides an example of lack of transparency in a company that has presence in more than 30 countries.

WTO Is Eager To Accept Russia?
Pravda

After years of losses on exports, and the addition of new countries to the UN, Russia seems to be aiming to join the World Trade Organization. Moreover, the author of the article argues that big players such as the USA are willing to accept Russia's entry into the organization. This article shows that Russia still has a long way to go to reach this goal, but steps have already been taken. For instance, according to Euro Commission member Frank Fisher, the negotiations "had certain success on the issues of agriculture."
