2) Featured Region: Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa, long ago a land of mystery, is today an economic paradox. Despite being blessed with a wealth of natural resources, from petroleum and natural gas in Nigeria, to precious gems and metals in Namibia, the region continues to be mired in poverty. Yet, behind this bleak facade lies a quiet optimism fueled by tradition and foreign investors.

New global markets now allow Sub-Saharan Africa to share its myriad cultures, by exporting traditional wares such as woven baskets. Further, the region has fostered a symbiotic partnership with China that has seen the creation of new infrastructure, and inflow of affordable goods, all in exchange for easy access to its abundant resources. Inspired by the relative success of this Sino-African co-op, countries including India and Japan have also initiated their own trade forays into the region. Even as many question the extent of such progress, and the intentions of foreign partners, few can deny the advent of Sub-Saharan Africa in the global economy.
