Feature of the Month : Big Data

In the technological age of today’s world, data is literally collected every second from virtually every source imaginable—social media posts, climate sensors, transaction records, and cell phone GPS signals just to name a few. This vast amount of “Big Data” is changing the ways decisions are made in global companies all around the world. Besides having an impact on business decision making, Big Data is shaping major global industries. One industry in particular is the healthcare industry. With the increasing technological advances of health care, Big Data has been gaining momentum within the industry and is changing the way patients are cared for.

One major trend within the industry is personalized medicine, the catchphrase of digital health. This personalized healthcare market is projected to be one of the largest growing global markets with an annual growth rate of 10 percent.  This emerging global market has interested global businesses including Big Data and healthcare companies. Big Data companies like IBM provide healthcare professionals specific data for each individual patient meaning personalized and better care overall. With Big Data, companies can find business opportunities overseas to solve healthcare problems in less developed countries where medical technology is less available. Discovering patterns with Big Data in markets where patient information is scarce, is a specific way where technology can be leveraged by international business to reduce the risks of expansion. Collaboration across industries and borders will also be important for success. No business, country, or sector with its current capabilities can succeed in isolation. International business practices are one way to accomplish the goal of providing better, personalized health care worldwide with Big Data.
