Feature of the Month: Global Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry is very important for countries around the world. 14% of those employed around the world work in manufacturing, and the industry accounts for 16% of the world’s GDP. The manufacturing industry relies on cost containment and efficiency, pushing companies to find the lowest cost areas around the globe.

With increasing globalization, companies have many more locations to choose from when expanding, allowing for relatively quick shifts in major global manufacturing centers. Countries that once attracted major manufacturing plants can become very unattractive in as little as a decade. Major reasons for this are increasing wages, changing exchange rates, stagnant labor productivity, and increasing energy costs. These four areas are very important to manufacturers looking to contain costs as they study where to expand or relocate.

Shifts in manufacturing between countries have profound effects on the global economy, impacting employment, policies, and trade. Because of this, countries around the world are constantly working to position themselves to become the future leaders in attracting the manufacturing industry.
