Airlines will achieve less turnover growth in 2008 and should post a loss of USD 2.9 billion (using a consensus oil price of USD 106.5 per barrel in 2008). The world economic slowdown and high fuel prices (34 per cent of their operating costs) will prevent many sector companies from recovering. This turbulence will affect American airlines in particular. The Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection granted to ATA Airlines, Aloha Airgroup, and Champion Air show that companies operating exclusively in the domestic market have been the first to suffer from shifting economic conditions.
Main Sectors
The hospitality and travel industry is a collection of companies catering to the needs of people with leisure time and money. These companies provide a range of services or products. The bulk of the industry is composed of lodging, from campgrounds to five star hotels; airlines and charters; and foodservice establishments, including restaurants, cafes, and catering. The industry also includes travel agencies and services, such as car rental or tours; gambling; and recreation and attractions, including sporting events, amusement parks, and roadside attractions. These different services also merge to offer options such as resorts or cruise lines, a mix of lodging, attractions, and even transportation. In the United States alone, there are over four million guest accommodations available, and many billions of dollars are spent on travel; with global travel becoming more affordable and in greater demand, the hospitality and travel industry will become increasingly important.
