Introduction: Nebraska Download PDF
Nebraska is located in the heart of the Great Plains region. Its rich soil has rendered agriculture, notably corn production, the cornerstone of the local economy. Recent times have seen corn prices reach record highs due in part to the increase in demand for ethanol production. Ethanol accounts for 25% of the use of the crop, while the majority is still used as feed for farm animals. Nebraska is also a major supplier of soybeans, grains, beef, and pork.
Nebraska’s strength in the agriculture industry is complemented by a fast-growing manufacturing sector, lead by food processing, as well as farm equipment, chemicals, and instruments. Transportation is another key industry; Nebraska is home to the world’s largest railroad classification yard, thanks in part to the agriculture sector, which fills 65% of the state’s freight. The service sector is also expanding thanks to the growing finance, insurance, and real estate markets.
