1) CURRENT TOPICS IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

There are multiple topics that are of concern to all businesses. Yet, there are others that strictly focus on international business issues. You can find the newest globalEDGE section, "Current Topics in IB" under the Global Resources section of the
Resource Desk. Here, articles from various sources regarding Corporate Governance, Social Responsibility and Sustainability, and the Globalization Debate are available. The Corporate Governance section includes various reports on issues relating to ethical standards of governance, both regionally and globally. Material is included from sources such as the European Corporate Governance Institute, International Corporate Governance Network, and the Transparency International Knowledge Center. Social Responsibility and Sustainability addresses methods and practices to help companies maintain business integrity, sustain development, and preserve environmental systems, among other areas of interest. Listed sources include INSEAD, the Global Reporting Initiative, and Business for Social Responsibility. Globalization Debate provides multiple sides of the globalization debate, from economic, policy, and academic standpoints. Information sources are from the BBC World Service, the World Bank Group, and Universities.

2) FEATURED COUNTRY

Our featured country this month is Cyprus.

Cyprus, an island on the south shore of Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea, has been an area of conflict affecting the relationship between Turkey and Greece in the last thirty years. However, recent elections in both countries have changed the face of their relationship. Now, "under a tightly scripted timetable, United Nations mediators are trying to seal an agreement between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on a complex power-sharing blueprint to get a united island into the European Union on May 1." It is a common consensus that resolution of the conflict will considerably increase Turkey's chances of receiving a date for full membership from the EU in 2005, which is a top priority of Mr. Erdogan -Turkey's recently elected Prime Minister. For the newly elected Greek President Karamanlis, a resolution would mean gaining a powerful partner in the region. Of course, the biggest winners will be the Cypriots, since a resolution would lead to an exponential growth in international investments in Cyprus.

No Chance of a Cyprus Deal Before May, Says Turkish Cypriot Leader Denktash
Yahoo! News
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040304/wl_afp/cyprus_un_denktash_040304182905
Despite all efforts made by the international community, Cyprus' unification before May 1st is at stake. Rauf Denktash, the Turkish Cypriot leader, wants more time to negotiate a deal that will unite the peoples of the currently divided Cyprus. On March 22, the two leaders of Cyprus will try again to negotiate, if they cannot reach an agreement, Turkey and Greece will step in until March 29. If this fails, the UN will "produce a draft accord that will be voted on in separate referendum in April". Any rejection will lead to the Greek Cypriots entering the EU and Turkey will have to delay its ambitions to join this same organization.
