Job Description

Roger Williams University (RWU), with an enrollment of 5,300, is experiencing an unusually dynamic period of growth and expansion. The next Dean of the Mario J. Gabelli School of Business will join this AACSB accredited program and lead the School as it continues to develop and enlarge its programmatic and geographical footprint – including a proposed new MBA program in Providence.

As a School of Business, it is ideally located in the east coast financial corridor between Boston and New York – only 30 minutes to Providence or Newport. The Gabelli School, with 30 faculty and 800 students, offers degree programs in accounting, business law, economics, finance, international business, management, marketing and web development. RWU’s main campus, located on 143 acres overlooking Mount Hope Bay in the historic and picturesque town of Bristol, also includes the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences and professional schools in Architecture, Engineering, Education and Criminal Justice, as well as Rhode Island's only law school. A smaller campus is located in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island.

Essential to the Dean's position is expansion of the School in the region through growth and development of the School's reputation using its programs, faculty and students. The following skills are considered essential.

  • Academic Support and Curriculum Development: The candidate should have a vision to expand the Mario J. Gabelli School as an academic center in the region and globally with the experience and ability to support and implement instructional delivery systems appropriate for the 21st century. This includes innovative residential programs, through team teaching or design studio models, as well as technology support programs, such as distance learning.
  • Encouraging growth and support for faculty in these initiatives is essential: The Center for Advanced Financial Education, with its two student investment funds and its trading center with Bloomberg terminals provides a model in this area.
  • Academic leadership for AACSB undergraduate and graduate programs is essential, to include faculty growth and development within an educational context committed to excellence in teaching, and where small classes and a dedicated faculty are the hallmarks.
  • Outreach to both internal and external stakeholders: The School and University are noted for the research collaboration between students and faculty. Recent initiatives in the Community Partnerships Center, in which teams of students and faculty collaborate with a local agency on needed projects, require town-gown collaboration, strategy, and execution. Increasingly, these projects require student teams from different schools. With the BS/JD 3 plus 3 program between the Business School and the Law School as a model, internal outreach to leverage the talents across the schools of a small university are important. External outreach includes solidifying contacts with the local, regional and international business and academic communities. As the cradle for the American Industrial Revolution, Rhode Island and the Northeast have a deep tradition in finance, manufacturing, international trade, and technology.
  • Commitment to diversity, collaborative decision making, and ability to articulate a vision: The candidate should have demonstrated the ability to listen to all points of view and to solicit and support diverse perspectives. Additionally, the candidate should have the self-confidence to support and manage a collegial decision making process respecting all stakeholders and leading to a strongly supported outcome.
  • Proven ability to raise funds from private and public sources: Continued growth of the Gabelli School of Business will require an able leader with comfort and success in raising the funds essential to realize the School’s mission, goals, and vision.

In support of the skills above, the expected experience includes: teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and a record of current scholarship sufficient to meet the standards for tenure; a terminal degree in business or a related field; experience in development; and progression in academic leadership positions. Candidates who lack traditional preparation for this position may be considered if they have demonstrated exceptional business-world leadership, meet the academic qualifications, know the work of higher education and demonstrate involvement in the intersection of business and academic preparation.

Nominations, applications, and inquiries may be sent in confidence. Full consideration will be given to all applications received by March 14, 2014. Application materials (to include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of five references – who will not be contacted without permission) must be electronically submitted to: RWUDean@academic-search.com
