Grenada: History


  1. 1498

    Christopher Columbus lands on the island territories.

  2. 1650

    French settlers buy Grenada from the English and establish a colony and a capital.

  3. 1783

    France gives Grenada to Britain as part of the Treaty of Versailles; slavery is used to grow crops on plantations.

  4. 1833

    Grenada becomes part of the British Windward Islands Administration.

  5. 1834

    Slavery is outlawed.

  6. 1958

    The Windward Islands Administration is dissolved, and Grenada joins the Federation of the West Indies.

  7. 1974

    Grenada gains full independence and adopts a parliamentary system.
