  1. 16th Century

    The Sao Tome and Principe government announces plans for a United States naval base in the country, which would serve to protect Sao Tome and Principe's oil interests.

  5. 2003

    Oil companies bid for Sao Tome and Nigeria controlled offshore oil blocs.

  6. 2005

    Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe jointly sign an exploration and production-sharing agreement with international oil firms.

  7. 2009

    Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe agree to enact a joint maritime military allegiance to protect offshore crude oil fields.
