Connecticut is located in the Northeast region of New England and was one of the 13 original colonies of the United States. The state has historically been highly industrial, producing the likes of textiles, silverware, sewing machines, and clocks for many years. After producing firearms and ammunition as far back as the American Revolution, defense manufacturing has remained an important part of the Connecticut economy. Many military products such as jet engines, helicopters, ammunition, and submarines originate in the state. Connecticut has the highest per capita income in the country and its financial sector is the largest contributor to revenue. These facts are largely due to a cluster of insurance companies in Hartford and hedge funds in the Gold Coast region.
