Estonia: History

  1. 1721

    Russia gains control over the area of modern-day Estonia.

  2. 1918

    The Russian empire collapses during WWI and Estonia declares independence.

  3. 1920

    Russia and Estonia sign a peace agreement in which Russia recognizes Estonia's independence; Estonia adopts its first constitution in which it establishes a parliamentary government.

  4. 1940

    The Soviet Union forcibly incorporates Estonia into the Soviet Union as part of a pact with Nazi Germany; Estonia is named the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (E.S.S.R.).

  5. 1991

    A coup against the U.S.S.R. occurs, leading to the collapse of Communist rule; Estonia declares independence, which is recognized by the Soviet government.

  6. 1994

    Estonia joins the Partnership for Peace, which signals military cooperation with NATO.

  7. 2004

    Estonia joins both NATO and the European Union.

  8. 2011

    Estonia adopts the Euro as its currency.
