  1. 1670

    The Dutch colonize present day Indonesia, naming it the Dutch East Indies. 

  2. 1942

    Japan invades the Dutch East Indies during World War II.

  3. 1949

    After four years of guerrilla warfare, the Dutch recognize Indonesian independence. 

  4. 1969

    West Papua is formally incorporated into Indonesia.

  5. 1997

    The Asian economic crisis significantly depreciated the Indonesia's rupiah currency value. 

  6. 2002

    East Timor gains its independence from Indonesia.

  7. 2004

    More than 220 thousands are killed by a tsunami that was triggered by an undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, damaging the fishing and tourism industries significantly.
