  1. 1670

    Dutch colonists bring all of Indonesia under one government, forming the Dutch East Indies.

  2. 1942

    Japan invades the Dutch East Indies during World War II.

  3. 1945

    Independence leader Sukarno returns from internal exile and declares Indonesia independent.

  4. 1949

    The Dutch recognize Indonesia's independence.

  5. 1969

    West Papua is formally incorporated into Indonesia and becomes the Irian Jaya Province.

  6. 1976

    Indonesia invades recently independent East Timor and incorporates it as a province.

  7. 1997

    In the midst of the Asian economic crisis, the Indonesian Rupiah declines considerably in value.

  8. 2002

    East Timor gains its independence from Indonesia.

  9. 2002

    Constitutional changes are viewed as a major step towards democracy. For the first time, voters are able to elect a president and vice president.

  10. 2004

    Hundreds of thousands are killed by a tsunami that was triggered by an undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.

  11. 2013

    Violent protests occur in response to Parliament approving major price hikes for diesel and petrol.
