  1. 17th Century

    Basutoland (present day Lesotho) is founded by Moshoeshoe, who unites groups who repel challenges from Zulus.

  2. 1860

    The area becomes a British protectorate.

  3. 1966

    Independence is gained and the Kingdom of Lesotho emerges.

  4. 2004

    The Prime Minister declares a state of emergency; mass food shortages occur after a three-year drought.

  5. 2005

    Lesotho launches program to offer HIV tests to all citizens.

  6. 2012

    Two consecutive crop failures cause Lesotho to face one of the worst food crises in its history
