Monaco: History


  1. Late 1400s

    The King of France, the Pope, and the Duke of Savoy all recognize Monaco's sovereignty. 

  2. 1524-1641

    Monaco allies itself with Spain and becomes a Spanish protectorate. 

  3. 1793

    The French revolution disposes the Grimaldi family in control of Monaco and unifies Monaco with France

  4. 1814

    Monaco is returned to the Grimaldi family and becomes a Sardinian protectorate until 1860. 

  5. 1861

    Monaco's independence is restored under the Franco-Monegasque treaty. 

  6. 1993

    Monaco joins the United Nations, becoming its smallest member state. 

  7. 2002

    Monaco doubles it port capacity by building a massive floating pier.
