Monaco: History


  1. 1524

    The ruling Grimaldi family allies with Spain while Monaco is under Spanish protection until 1641.

  2. 1814

    Monaco is returned to the Grimaldis after being unified with France since the French Revolution in 1793.

  3. 1861

    Independence is restored under the Franco-Monegasque treaty.

  4. 1911

    Monaco's first constitution provides for an elected National Council to share legislative power with the prince.

  5. 1993

    Monaco becomes the smallest member state to join the United Nations.

  6. 2004

    The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) places Monaco on the blacklist of uncooperative tax havens, where it remains until 2009.
