Sweden: History

  1. 1397

    The Union of Kalmar unites Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

  2. 1905

    The union between Sweden and Norway is peacefully dissolved at Norway's request. This led to the creation of the first parliamentary government in Sweden.

  3. 1920

    Steadily improving trade conditions result in a boom period that takes Sweden from a primarily agricultural economy to an industrial one.

  4. 1952

    Sweden becomes a founding member of the Nordic Council, which is established to further the mutual interests of Scandinavian countries.

  5. 1959

    Sweden becomes a founding member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

  6. 1995

    Sweden becomes a member of the European Union.

  7. 2003

    A referendum for Sweden to adopt the euro is defeated. The Swedish krona continues to be the national currency.
