  1. 1938

    Oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia and production begins under the United States-controlled Aramco (Arabian American Oil Company).

  2. 1960

    Saudi Arabia becomes a founding member of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries).

  3. 1973

    Saudi Arabia leads an oil boycott against Western countries that supported Israel in the October War.

  4. 1979

    Saudi Arabia cuts diplomatic ties with Egypt after Egypt makes peace with Israel.

  5. 1980

    Saudi Arabia takes full control of Aramco from the United States.

  6. 1981

    Saudi Arabia becomes a founding member of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

  7. 1987

    Diplomatic relations with Egypt are reinstated.

  8. 2005

    The first ever nationwide municipal elections take place.

  9. 2008

    Saudi Arabia and Qatar agree on a final delineation of a shared border.

  10. 2010

    Saudi Arabia purchases $60 billion of weapons from the United States.
