The School of Accounting and Finance in the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Arts invites nominations, applications, and expressions of interest for the position of Director. This is an opportunity for an ambitious leader to spearhead the implementation of the school’s strategic plan, promoting world-class research and experiential learning. The successful candidate will be a person of academic stature, appointed with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The appointment as Director, for an initial term of four years (renewable for a further four years), begins July 1, 2018.
The Director will have the leadership skills, vision and aspiration to develop the School of Accounting and Finance as the premiere school in Canada for accounting and finance. The Director must possess outstanding interpersonal skills to inspire faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the external community to raise the school’s national and international profile. Desirable attributes include demonstrated experience in administration within a university setting, and strong connections with the business community in Canada. The Director will be accountable for all aspects of the school’s strategy and development including fundraising, operations, budgeting, resource allocation, and performance management. The Director acts as a champion for the continued evolution of the school within the university, to increase the school’s resources, external profile, and recognition. The Director engages with a range of stakeholders including students, alumni, employers, and professional bodies. The School of Accounting and Finance offers four undergraduate accounting and finance programs in conjunction with the Faculties of Arts, Mathematics, and Science. It attracts exceptionally well-qualified students into its programs; for example, the largest of the programs—Accounting and Financial Management—admits 300 first-year students annually, carefully selected from among 3,000 applications.
To complement their classroom studies, undergraduate students undertake at least four work-terms of paid employment in diverse financial services roles with the university’s employer partners. In addition, the school offers both Master of Accounting and Master of Taxation professional programs, and the largest PhD program in accounting in Canada. The school’s growing faculty of over 50 members comprises a blend of research-active tenure-track and tenured faculty with specialist lecturers from industry. The school’s researchers regularly publish in the top academic journals in the field, while lecturers and practitioners bring industry expertise to the classroom. A professional staff of 20 members provides support for the school’s pedagogical and industry-focussed mission.

Compensation for this appointment will be in the range of $250,000 to $325,000, commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.
