Associate Professor Eric Werker (https://beedie.sfu.ca/profiles/EricWerker) invites applicants for a post-doctoral fellow position that begins September 1, 2017 or January 1, 2018 at the latest. The position is for one year, with possibility of renewal for a second year depending on performance. The fellow is expected to work as a collaborator on an international research grant funded by the U.K.

Department for International Development through the Effective States for Inclusive Development (ESID) Research Centre (http://www.effective-states.org/) at the University of Manchester. ESID is a network of researchers and policy partners in Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, India, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, the UK, the USA and other countries. ESID researchers are working together to investigate what kinds of politics help to secure inclusive development and how these can be promoted. The first phase of this research explored the political economy of economic growth drivers and maintenance, with the underlying hypothesis that private sector interests interact with government capabilities and the political settlement to shape country growth trajectories. The next phase will involve the refining of the hypothesis with more micro-foundational studies. The fellow will work to understand the political economy of diversification in resource-rich developing countries, using statistical methods, case studies, and fieldwork. Duties include assembling and analyzing datasets, designing and implementing international research fieldwork, and writing scholarly articles. Office space will be at SFU’s downtown Vancouver campus.

Candidates must have excellent oral and written English; a PhD (in hand, or forthcoming) in economics, political science, development studies, or business; experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods; and international experience, ideally in resource-rich countries.
