1899

The Caroline Islands in Micronesia come under German colonial control.

1914

Japan occupies Micronesia during World War I.

1939-1945

Micronesia becomes a major battleground during World War II. 

1947

Micronesia comes under U.S. administration, in the form of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was under the United Nations' authority. 

1986

Micronesia signs a "Compact of Free Association" with the United States until 2001, under which Washington provides substantial economic assistance in return for taking charge of Micronesia's defense affairs, including the right to establish military bases. 

1991 Micronesia joins the United Nations.

2003

A renegotiated 20-year compact with the U.S., worth $3.5bn to Micronesia and Marshall Islands, is signed by the U.S. president.
