New Mexico
Situated on the Mexican border in America’s Southwest, New Mexico has a rich history and culture. High populations of Hispanics and Native Americans give the state a diverse demographic makeup and truly distinct culture. Vast expanses of arid and semi-arid land dotted with cacti and sagebrush create a unique landscape. New Mexico has the lowest proportion of water area of any U.S. state. Three major Air Force bases, a missile testing range, and an army proving ground are located in New Mexico. Government spending constitutes a substantial portion of the New Mexico economy. The government is the state's single largest employer, largely due to the aforementioned military installations. Virgin Galactic, the world’s first private space tourism company, is based in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
