EAC: History

1917 Customs union between Kenya and Uganda is formed.

1927 Tanzania joins the Customs Union.

1948 EAC is named the East African High Commission.

1961 The name changes to East African Common Services Organization.

1967 The East African Common Services Organization is superseded by the East African Community.

1977 The East African Community collapses due disagreements between member countries.

November 30, 1999 The East African Community is reestablished when its treaty was signed.

July 7, 2000 New treaty comes into force.

2009 Burundi and Rwanda join the EAC.

2016 South Sudan becomes the sixth member of the East African Community.
