Kiribati: Introduction

Kiribati is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. It comprises 33 atolls, and one raised coral island. Kiribati is about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. The government system is a republic; the chief of state and head of government is the president. Kiribati has a mixed economic system, which includes a variety of private freedoms combined with weak centralized economic planning and government regulation.
