Port of Mindelo becomes an important commercial center, helped by its location in the middle of Atlantic shipping routes.
Armed rebellion begins against Portugal.
Cape Verde becomes independent from Portugal, and the country begins efforts to establish unity with Guinea-Bissau.
Following a coup in Guinea-Bissau, relations between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau become strained and the plan for unity between the countries is scrapped.
Cape Verde becomes a member of the World Trade Organization.
