Overview: Latin America

Latin America stretches from the isthmus south of Mexico and continues to the southernmost point of Chile. The Caribbean islands are also recognized in this region. The countries vary in size from the smallest Caribbean islands to the sprawling area of Brazil, which accounts for roughly half the population in the region.

The Andes are the world’s longest above sea-level mountain range and are the second highest, superceded only by the Asian Himalayas. South America is home to the world’s largest rain forest, which covers approximately one-third of the continent. Angel Falls, in Venezuela, drops water more than 979 meters. This spectacular plummet places this landmark at the top of the world’s waterfalls.

Brazil produces more than one trillion U.S. dollars of goods and services yearly. This far outpaces any other country in the region. The Caribbean economies are very tourist-oriented and many have achieved a good standard of living. Venezuela (OPEC member) is one of the world’s largest oil exporters.
