Overview: Asia & Middle East

Civilization began in Asia roughly 5,500 years ago. This continent is the world’s largest both in geographic area and population. The climate of Asia varies from the frozen Arctic to the balmy tropics near the equator.

Asia features the highest and lowest points on earth. Mount Everest (located on the Nepal-Tibet border) rises more than 8,484 meters above sea level, while the Dead Shore (between Israel and Jordan) plunges more than 399 meters below sea level.

Asians established the first cities, legal systems, and developed the first farmer and merchant societies. Writing, and consequently literature, was also created in Asia. In addition, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus Christ, and Muhammad, the founders of the world’s major religions, were Asian.

The world’s two most populated countries, China and India respectively, account for nearly two-fifths of the world’s population. Macau, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the areas with the highest population density on earth, are also located in Asia.
