In late September, Climate Week took place in New York City where a large “Climate Clock” was on display in Union Square. This clock revealed that we have less than 7 years to reverse the environmental damage humans have created. The clock was seen all over social media and was a brutal wake-up call for many. As a result of events such as this, many companies are taking large steps to become more sustainable.

Wall Street Journal has ranked Sony Japan as the most sustainably managed company in the world. The company has been so successful in maintaining sustainability standards in part because the company’s executive leadership realizes that "for us to continue with this kind of business, the planet and society must be sustainable and healthy. Otherwise, Sony cannot exist." The company has a goal to have zero environmental impact by 2050, but they have set some medium-term environmental goals such as abolishing plastic packaging for small products, reductions in power consumption, and the increased usage of renewable energy.

Other hardware companies like Cisco Systems U.S., LG Electronics South Korea, and HP U.S. are all in the Wall Street Journal’s top 10 most sustainable companies.

The hope is that these leading companies will inspire other individuals and companies of all sizes to do their part and start working on how they can create as little environmental impact as possible. For example, Sony is working specifically on creating more sustainable supply chains. This practice not only saves the company money but also reduces the number of resources needed. Practices like this can spread to other companies, therefore making supply chains all over the world more sustainable.
